Technology

Introduction to Technology @ Fernleigh School

Fernleigh School is one of very few primary schools who can offer specialist technology lessons. With a qualified 'IT Education' teacher students are developing skills and awareness in technology way beyond those of many bigger schools.

Fernleigh School offers students specialised technology lessons which allows them to create, connect and communicate digital content. From sending a series of animated images to creating an interactive presentation, all students have and will continue to develop skills in using what is now regarded as Web 2 technologies.

Without doubt technology is fast paced and many students are becoming subjected to both positive and negative aspects of it. With a guided approach students will learn to discriminate between what is appropriate and innappropriate use of technology. They will be come aware of the possibilities technology can offer to a student, a consumer, a creator or for amusement and entertainment. Technology is becoming more and more integrated in our lives and Education is no different. Teachers are now extending the teaching repetoire to include interactive and other technologies - it is certainly an exciting time.

 Connected Classrooms

As part of the Federal Governments Digital Revoluation Fernleigh School has had installed a Connected Classroom.

As the name implies a Connected Classroom allows a connection between teacher and student, student and teacher and student to student. This is not limited by a single classroom but can be extended outside the four walls to include nearby schools and indeed schools anywhere in the world who have the ability and equipment to make connections over the internet.

A Connected Classroom includes

  • an Interactive Classroom (interactive whiteboard, video conferencing facility and data collaboration)
  • enabling direct video links to allow online field trips to places such as the State Library, The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the National Museum of Australia
  • allowing university and industry experts to be connected into classrooms to deliver lectures and respond to questions and ideas
  • supporting increased use of ICT within Quality Teaching
  • supporting teachers to personalise learning
  • enhancing opportunities for collaboration between students, teachers, classes and schools across DET
  • providing necessary infrastructure to enhance collegial support networks for teachers.

To further explain what each of these components are I include clips and information for your reading. As well as Click the Department of Educatins Technology Guide.

What is a SMART Board Interactive Whiteboard?

What is Video Conferencing?

video conference is a set of interactive telecommunication technologies which allow two or more locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. It allows students to see and hear others. Students can set up discussions and debates prior to the conference or just follow the general flow of the discussion. It can occur for both formal learning or be part of an informal get together.

What is Bridgit?

With Bridgit, you can communicate directly with staff through y our computer, deliver a tutorial, hold a meeting, have a chat, and demonstrate something online.

Teachers Can:

• Hold online discussions with your students or meet with remote colleagues

• Collaborate on a document – everyone can type into it!

• Present a tutorial online.

• Choose between using video, audio, or both, live broadcasting or access at leisure.

• Show content directly from your own computer screen. Use something as simple as a Powerpoint presentation to display content.

• Guide students through how to do something on their computers by ‘sharing your desktop' and using the Bridgit online tools (pointer, highlighter, pen etc)
